Hermanus, the holiday hub of the Cape Whale Coast, is internationally renowned as one of the best places in the world to view whales from land. Each year, Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay for an extended coastal family holiday, to mate, calve and nurse their young.

So, whether you are a permanent resident or just visiting, read on for some whale-spotting pointers:

WHEN?

• Peak season: June to November
• Best sightings: August to October
• Whales can often be seen just metres from the shoreline (saving visitors from having to earn their sea legs).

WHERE?

• Gearing's Point
• Siever's Point
• Kwaaiwater & Roman Rock
• Dreunkrans

Or simply take the time to stroll the famous Cliff Path and listen out for the Whale Crier.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

• The tell-tale misty "blow" rising above the ocean
• Flocks of excited seabirds circling overhead (they know something you don't!)

Visitors may also spot Humpback and Bryde's Whales, along with dolphins and seals, but keep your camera ready as whales have a knack for appearing just after you've looked away.

The annual Kalfiefees and Hermanus Whale Festival celebrate the arrival of these gentle giants and attract thousands of visitors from around the world.

Beyond their ecological significance, the whales contribute substantially to Hermanus's appeal as a lifestyle and investment destination. Properties with ocean views and proximity to whale-watching hotspots are highly sought after, enhancing demand for holiday homes, luxury rentals and permanent residences. After all, not many homeowners can claim that seasonal whale watching is part of their view and, arguably a far better neighbour than most.
